Truffle treat's a trifle expensive
By ONLINE REPORTER
A POSH London restaurant is serving up what is probably the UK's most expensive ice cream.
Ordering the luxury dessert at Luciano costs a cool £25.
It comes on a bed of white truffle shavings.
The same amount will also buy a bowl of truffle ice cream, served with a poached pear in aged balsamic vinegar.
Restaurant staff say the money is worth it as white truffles are the "Dom Perignon" of the truffle world.
The fungi, which grow underground, have a musky, pungent taste and are generally served uncooked.
They are only available in season, between October and December.
A spokesman for Luciano said: "You can't compare the taste to any other food - it is simply sublime."
Luciano, on St James's Street, was opened last year by Sir Rocco Forte and Marco Pierre White.
Other London restaurants currently serving truffles include The Ivy, Locanda Locatelli and Cipriani.
The world’s most expensive truffle - a rare white alba truffle weighing 2lb 10oz - sold for more than £60,000 at an international auction last November.
