Michael Sanders

Michael Sanders worked for a number of years for Poseidon Press, Simon & Schuster, and Pocket Books in New York City as an editor before turning to writing full time and moving to Maine in 1996. He earned his living for several years freelance editing, copywriting, and writing for industry before publishing his first book, THE YARD: Building A Destroyer at Bath Iron Works.

The success of that book allowed him to embark on his true path -- the rich and wide world of food writing.

His second book, From Here, You Can't See Paris: Seasons of a French Village and Its Restaurant, was the result of a year spent with his wife, daughter, and dog in Les Arques, a village of 50 people in the Lot region of France. It is an intimate exploration of village life and characters, truffles, local cheeses, and, of course, of the life of a country auberge chef, Jacques Ratier, in whose restaurant kitchen he ended up working.

This was followed by Families of the Vine: Seasons Among the Winemakers of Southwest France, an equally intense and far-ranging look at the lives and times of three French winemaking families in the Cahors region through the heart-breaking challenge of the devastating heat wave of 2003.

The Mysteries of Armagnac, his fourth book, is currently in negotiation and should be out in 2011.

His narratives and profiles of farmers, fishermen, chefs, and all those who produce the food we eat have appeared in the New York Times, Gourmet, Saveur, and Yankee. He is a frequent contributor to Downeast Magazine, usually in collaboration with Portland-based food photographer, Russell French. He has also begun writing for European publications, notably the Dutch gastronomy magazine "Bouillon."

He recently returned from a yearlong sojourn in Budapest, Hungary where his wife was completing a Fulbright Teaching Exchange as he explored Hungarian foodways. Sample articles may be found at:
