Dr. Nicholas Malajczuk is forestry educated and has over 25 years research experience as a scientist with CSIRO, Division of Forestry. Dr. Malajczuk’s professional expertise includes Australian and international research on plantation establishment and nutrition in both temperate and tropical/sub-tropical environments. He has worked with major forestry companies in Australia on the inoculation of eucalypts with mycorrhizal fungi and nutrient application to maximize tree growth.
Dr Malajczuk also has extensive forestry experience (15 years) in China, the Philippines and Japan in the inoculation of forest trees with mycorrhizal fungi and studied edible fungi such as Matsutake and Boletus edulis. More recently he has been a consultant to forestry projects in the agricultural areas of Australia including the growing of sandalwood, brushwood, oil mallees, blue gums, teak and tropical horticultural crops. He is an Adjunct Professor at Edith Cowan University, Western Australia. He has supervised post graduate students in various aspects of forestry and truffle growing. He has published over 160 research papers in international journals and books, and numerous unpublished reports to respective funding bodies.
As Managing Director of his company Treetec Consulting he has initiated the growing of truffles in Tasmania and Western Australia. He has supervised a number of PhD students carrying out key research aspects of truffle development. He is regarded as the world leader in the cultivation of black truffles being invited to France in 2007 and 2008 to give key note talks on the cultivation of the black truffle in the southern Hemisphere. The property, Hazel Hill, in Manjimup, Western Australia is an icon in the eyes of truffle growers as it produces nearly 80% of the southern hemisphere truffles. He also has setup and interacts with smaller scale truffle growers in Australia and New Zealand to produce truffles, using proven Treetec trufferie management techniques.
Dr Malajczuk is Managing Director of Mycorrhizal Applications International Australia (MAI Aust. Pty Ltd). The parent company, Mycorrhizal Applications Inc, is in the USA under the expert leadership of Dr Michael Amaranthus. They are successful producers of mycorrhizal inoculum for agriculture, horticulture and forestry. One of the products these companies have developed is a bio-stimulant that is proving to make a difference to production levels in trufferies.
