The Truffle Growers Forum serves as an annual gathering and focal point for the International truffle industry allowing growers, purveyors, researchers and journalists to keep up with advances in truffle science and farming methods, engage with a wealth of experts and make valuable contacts within the industry. Because in truffles, as in every other endeavor, it matters who you know, the Truffle Growers’ Forum provides the foundation for future business and research collaboration.
The Truffle Growers’ Forum will be held Friday, January 27th, and Saturday, January 28th, 2012 at The Hilton Eugene, Headquarters hotel for the Oregon Truffle Festival. Friday consists of a lecture series covering the breadth of the truffle cultivation industry culminating in the Festival keynote address. Breakfast and a truffle lunch are included on Friday.
Saturday’s events are in the field, consisting of a Tuber melanosporum Truffiere tour with Friday’s speakers, a Winery Lunch with a guest chef, and a truffle hunt with truffle dogs for the native Oregon white truffles.
Speakers
Dr. Nick Malajczuk, Managing Director of Treetec Consulting and Mycorrhizal Applications International Australia. Dr. Malajczuk is the technical expert behind Australia’s flagship truffle orchard, the Wine and Truffle Company Hazel Hill property that dominates Tuber melanosporum production outside of Europe. 2011 production in the Hazel Hill orchard reached 3.3 tons.
Marcos Morcillo, Director of Micologia Forestal & Aplicada of Barcelona, Spain, a leader in Spain’s truffle tree production industry with approximately 300 customer orchards successfully producing Tuber melanosporum, and a pioneer in advancing methods of truffle and mushroom cultivation. Over the past decade his company has developed a methodology for inoculation of existing trees with Tuber melanosporum, reliably producing truffles in as few as two years.
Jeff Ross, Garden and Truffiere Manager for Blackberry Farm, among North America’s preeminent culinary resorts, located in Walland, Tennessee. Jeff will present a case study of Blackberry Farm’s four year old truffiere.
Dr. James Trappe, world renowned truffle researcher and professor emeritus at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon. Among Dr. Trappe’s numerous contributions to our understanding of truffles was his academic mentoring of many of the world’s leaders in truffle cultivation, as well as many of the speakers who have presented their work at the Oregon Truffle Festival. These include Dr. Nick Malajczuck, Dr. Carlos Colinas, Christine Fischer, Dr. Shannon Berch, Dr. Tom Michaels, and Dr. Charles Lefevre among many others. Dr. Trappe will once again serve as Master of Ceremonies for the Truffle Growers’ Forum.
Dr. Xavier Vilanova Sola is a multifaceted and restless man. He is son of the well known plain air painter Ramon Vilanova, and he fall in love with nature since he was a child. He studied biology and became doctor in microbiology in 2005.
Dr. Shannon Berch is a Research Scientist with the Government of British Columbia and adjunct professor with the University of British Columbia in Vancouver and with the Centre for Livelihoods and Ecology at Royal Roads University (RRU) in Victoria. She is a founding member of the Truffle Association of British Columbia (TABC) and part of their research and development program. Recently, she and her husband started a truffle consulting business that independently assesses quality of inoculated seedlings before planting and colonization in the truffle orchard. Both as a lover of truffles and an active member of the South Vancouver Island Mycological Society (SVIMS), she is on the search for edible native truffles in British Columbia.
Dr. Charles Lefevre, owner of New World Truffieres, Inc, co-founder of the Oregon Truffle Festival and organizer of the Truffle Dog Training and Truffle Cultivation Seminars. Dr. Lefevre once again hosts the Truffle Growers’ Forum.
The full program for the 2011 Truffle Growers Forum will be announced as it finalizes. Please contact Dr. Charles Lefevre with questions.
