Dr. Xavier Vilanova Sola, son of the well known plein air painter Ramon Vilanova, is a multifaceted and restless man. As a child, he learned to paint from his father, but also fell in love with nature, which eventually led him to study biology. He spent eight years as a regional government natural resources expert before going on to graduate studies. In 2005 he received a Ph.D. in microbiology from Universitat de Barcelona. He is coauthor of several scientific papers and communications on bacterial ecology published around the world.
Dr. Vilanova has harvested wild mushrooms from an early age. He began his professional work with mushrooms in 2006 when he started a truffle plantation with his friend and colleague Marcos Morcillo. Since then, he has joined the staff of Micologia Forestal & Aplicada in Barcelona, Spain, and has received funding from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation to study bacteria associated with Tuber melanosporum. He will present preliminary finding on this project at the Oregon Truffle Festival.
